Harbin Indoor Ski Resort

HARBIN INDOOR SKI RESORT- CHINA
WANDA HARBIN
by Patel Architecture Inc.

Harbin, which is originally a Manchu word meaning "a place for drying fishing nets", grew from a small rural settlement on the Songhua River to become one of the largest cities in the northeast. It is known for its bitterly cold winters and is often called the "Ice City." Harbin is notable for its beautiful ice sculptures in winter. In the 1920s, the city was considered China's fashion capital since new designs from Paris and Moscow reached there first before arriving in Shanghai. In 2010, Harbin was declared a UNESCO "City of Music".

History and culture of Harbin was woven together and used as the base during the initial inception of the concept, when designing this indoor ski resort for the Wanda Group. Patel and his team, studied the movement of the skiing, and was also fascinated with fluid moves on the slippery slopes. Many of these factors influenced the design of the Harbin Ski resort, that also will accommodate the shopping mall, performing arts theaters, movie cineplex including IMAX, restaurants and many more activities. As part of the master plan, there is the theme park proposed for the summer as well as winter fun activities.

An indoor ski slope with high, medium and low of 6 ski, drop of more than 100 meters, can accommodate 1,500 people skiing, will be one of the world's largest indoor ski slope. In addition, an indoor ice-skating rink is designed based on the world-class competition standard.

QINGDAO- DREAM CITY
Performing Arts Theatre and Film Convention Center
by Patel Architecture + GDF Design Associates

Lying across the Shandong Peninsula while looking out to the Yellow Sea, Qingdao is a major seaport, naval base, and industrial centre. Qingdao is a famous historical and cultural city, and a cradle of Taoism in China. As early as 6,000 years ago, humans began to settle in Qingdao. In Eastern Zhou period, the Dongyi nationality lived here and created the colorful Dawenkou, Longshan and Dongyueshi Cultures. After unifying the country, the first emperor of Qin Dynasty visited City of Qingdao thrice. In Han Dynasty, the Emperor Wudi worshiped Heaven and his ancestors and built 9 imperial ritual halls on Nvgu Hill near Jiaozhou Bay. Subsequently, Qingdao developed into a bustling town called Jiaoao in the late Qing Dynasty. In 1981, the government of Qing Dynasty set up defences, which was the beginning of the building of Qingdao. In 1897, Germany sent soldiers to capture Qingdao. After the First World War broke out, Japan captured Qingdao and began its military colonial ruling in place of Germany. in June of 1949 Qingdao was liberated by the PLA.

Qingdao history, culture and it's geographical location were important considerations in the design for the Qingdao theatre and Film convention center project. From the beginning of the design, Patel started with cluster of relatively conventional forms and motifs organized around a central plaza. The design became successively more elaborate as Patel started to stretch physical forms to keep pace with his imagination. An increasingly fluid and organic vocabulary emerged. To captures the fluid curves and unique forms of these unconventional architectural structures, computer modeling began to play it's part to help with the evolution of the concepts. Waves in the ocean and fish were behind the design inspirations for the Wanda Qingdao Dream city project. Undulating wave forms, covered with fish scale like surface, creates sculptural spaces for people to enjoy and entertain.
